What you put into a young person's education determines what they put into the world.
Creativity is not a luxury.
It is what builds stronger communities, better thinkers, and more powerful voices.
Every young person deserves access to it.
Great artists are not made in a semester. At NYC Salt, photography is the foundation — the tool through which students develop creativity, vision, and a sense of themselves as artists. Over two to four years, that foundation deepens into technical mastery, a professional network, and a creative practice that stays with them for life.
A single college course runs about 45 hours. In one year at NYC Salt, students receive nearly 200 hours of photography instruction, mentorship, and workshops — the equivalent of more than four college-level courses in a single discipline, completely free. Over a full two to four year enrollment, that is the equivalent of up to 16 college-level courses. Our students do not discover photography in college. They arrive already fluent in it.
When photography emerged in the 19th century, it democratized the image, putting the power to create and be seen into the hands of people who had never had access to the art world. For 21 years, NYC Salt has been carrying that tradition forward, investing in New York City public high school students by ensuring they have access to exactly what the creative industry requires: professional tools, professional teachers, and professional networks.
Right now, we serve 45 students a year. We have the capacity to serve 75.
The difference is $300,000, and the Salt Patron Circle is how we get there.
"My high school did not offer inspiring programming nor push me to do anything other than regurgitate information and graduate.
Salt was the first to see my creativity as more than a doodle on a page — but as the beginning of a future."
— Devin Osorio, SCAD graduate, textile designer and artist
Join the Salt Patron Circle
The Salt Patron Circle is our founding community of individual supporters: people who want to be close to this work, invest in its future, and help us grow. Every gift directly funds students. $10,000 fully enrolls one young person in the complete program. Every dollar below that is a step toward it.
