NYC Salt Students Capture the Power of Strongman
On December 7, 2016, NYC Salt students stepped into the heart of Washington Heights to document a unique test of strength: a strongman competition hosted at George Washington High School. From the thunderous deadlift of oversized tires to the grueling yoke run and the iconic Husafell Stone Carry, students were immersed in the athletes' raw intensity and determination.
With exclusive access granted by Global Strongman Gym, our students were encouraged to explore every angle—literally and creatively. They moved freely throughout the event, capturing candid moments, dramatic action, and the spirit of community that powered the competition.
What Students Learned
How to tell a compelling story through images, focusing on both the action and the emotion behind the scenes.
Techniques for shooting in fast-paced, unpredictable environments, adapting to changing light and movement.
The importance of building trust and rapport with subjects to capture authentic moments.
Why We Did It
This project was designed to push students beyond the classroom, challenging them to apply their technical skills in a real-world setting. By photographing the strongman competition, students not only honed their craft but also learned to find and share powerful stories within their own communities. At NYC Salt, we believe in giving young artists opportunities to grow, connect, and see the world—and themselves—through a new lens.
This unforgettable experience would not have been possible without the incredible support of our partners and mentors. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to:
The staff of Sports Illustrated for generously mentoring our students and sharing their expertise in sports photography.
Cliff Hausner, for bringing professional Profoto lighting and working side-by-side with students to create striking portraits of the competitors.
Nikon, for supplying long glass and professional camera systems, empowering our students to capture the action with the highest quality equipment.
Thank you for believing in our students and helping us inspire the next generation of visual storytellers.
