Approach

NYC SALT's approach is simple: we engage kids with digital photography to give them a creative outlet, introduce them to great and creative career possibilities, and connect them with mentors and role models. Art has a very important part in the education of a child because art education builds an executive skillset in students that academic classes do not foster. Art education builds self confidence, teamwork, and creative problem solving - skills students need to succeed both in and out of the classroom.

Inner-city students are twice as likely to drop out of school than students from less urban areas, AND 1 in 4 hispanic students will drop out. NYC SALT seeks to reverse these trends. All of our students graduate from high school and apply to college. Ultimately, we want to see our students succeed not just in photography, but in life.

Our program reinforces seven key core values: commitment, growth, respect, community, contribution, creativity, and integrity.

Students meet weekly for intensive classes. Each class is different, but every class includes our central components:

Connection: with instructors and with fellow students
Critique: learning to give and receive feedback
Journaling: a time of reflection and analysis
Instruction: from top-level professionals
Inspiration: catching a vision
Hands-on workshop: putting learning into action
Future assignment: applying skills learned in class

Each student leaves the program with a portfolio of professional-quality photographs and the skills necessary to begin a career in photography as an assistant to a top-quality photographer: photography, videography, graphic design, photo-editing, and illustration. More importantly, they make connections with caring mentors and learn the ins and outs of a creative industry. Ultimately, they assume responsibility for equipment and projects and experience the joy of accomplishment. They develop life skills that will help them to succeed in any career they choose.
